Women’s History Month at VIU

Whitney Wood Women's Pain
Dr. Whitney Wood recently delivered a talk on Understanding Women's Pain in Canadian Medical History.

When it comes to Women’s History Month, VIU has a lot to celebrate as well as a lot to reflect on. The accomplishments of women are everywhere around the institution. From senior leadership in administration, across the academy, throughout all offices and initiatives, as more than half the employee population, women play a major role.

President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr Deb Saucier, newly appointed Chancellor, Dr. Judith Sayers, Provost and Vice-President Academic, Dr. Carol Stuart, and CFO and Vice-President Administration, Marlene Kowalski make up the top two levels of leadership. VIU thrives in large part due to its gender representation.

Because it fits so perfectly, we want to highlight some of the recent work of our gender historians. These examples explore gender, history and the medical sciences, and encourage the next generation of researchers and contributors to the field.

Watch Dr. Whitney Wood’s Colloquium Series talk: Understanding Women’s Pain in Canadian Medical History. She delivered this enlightening talk on Friday, October 23 as part of VIU’s annual Arts and Humanities Colloquium Series.

VIU’s Dr. Cheryl Krasnick Warsh, Dr. Cathryn Spence, Dr. Katharine Rollwagen and Dr. Whitney Wood worked with Dr. Kristin Burnett from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Dr. Lynn Thomas from the University of Washington in Seattle; and Dr. Sara Ritchey from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to host a symposium on Health, Healing and Caring in Historical Perspective.

Note: VIU’s Communications Office announced the symposium when it occurred, but thought it was worth a reminder due to Women’s History Month and the fact that the symposium took place in the spring while many of us were distracted.
