VIU’s Severe Weather procedures

With winter on its way, it is time for everyone to review VIU’s Severe Weather procedures.

These procedures outline what you will need to do in the event the University needs to close campuses or facilities due to severe weather.  

Please take the following actions:

1. Review the Severe Weather Procedures.
2. Familiarize yourself with where you can find information about whether or not VIU’s campuses and/or facilities will need to close due to severe weather. An announcement re campus/facility closures due to severe weather will be pushed out in the following order:
1. The VIU Safety App will have the most up to date information.
2. Email: employee emails; student emails.
3. VIU’s website banner: www.viu.ca. 
4. Updates will also be posted on: 
1. VIU’s Twitter accounts: @viunews; @VIUniversity
2. VIU’s Facebook pages: www.facebook.com/viuniversity; www.facebook.com/viunews
3. Remember that although every effort will be made to communicate messages by 6:30 am on the day of the closure, there may be times when weather conditions change quickly and a decision to close the campus will need to be made after 6:30 am. 
4. There are many micro-climates in and around our various campuses. This means the campus might be safe but other areas are not. Because of this, VIU’s employees and students are expected to use their best judgement based on conditions in their areas when deciding if they are able to come in if the campus is open.
1. With the ability to work and study remotely, some of us may be able to continue to work and study when our campuses and facilities close due to severe weather. As an employee, if you need input or direction, please contact your manager. If you are a student and are unsure, please check with your instructor.
5. Please do not attempt to travel to a closed location until you have received confirmation that it has been reopened.
