VIU welcomes new Dean of Arts and Humanities

Dr. Claire Grogan takes on critical leadership role with Vancouver Island University 

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is pleased to announce that, after acompetitive search, Dr. Claire Groganhas joined VIU as its next Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

In this role, Grogan will provide strategic and innovative leadership to the faculty, managing all academic, personnel and financial aspects. She will work in collaboration with VIU’s academic leaders, senior administrators, faculty, staff and other key stakeholders to provide leadership and support the strategic direction necessary to achieve the goals outlined in the University’s Strategic Plan: People, Place, Potential.

“I am grateful for the exciting opportunity that joining the VIU community as the Dean of Arts and Humanities offers,” said Grogan. “I look forward to working with everyone here and contributing to VIU’s success.”

Grogan comes to VIU from Bishop’s University in Quebec, where she was a professor in the Department of English. Since 2006 her administrative roles have included Chair of the English Department, Interim Dean of Arts and Science, and, most recently, Associate Vice-Principal Academic: Faculty Relations. 

Grogan holds a PhD from the University of Calgary, a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education, and an MA and a BA in English Literature and Language from Trinity College, Oxford University.

Grogan is a published author and noted editor, reviewer and presenter. Her research explores the politics of gender and genre as part of the battle for individual rights in late 18th-Century British literature, polemic and caricature. Her editing projects include scholarly editions of Jane Austen, Elizabeth Hamilton and Thomas Paine (all with Broadview press). Recent work on Digital Humanities includes digitizing Canada’s oldest continuously run student publication The Mitre (1893 to present) and creating an archive of World War One material Bishop’s Fighting Men.

Over the course of her career, Grogan has received several awards and honours including fellowships at the Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University and Chawton House.

When Dr. Grogan is not working in her field she can be found hiking and exploring Vancouver Island with her dog.

She joined VIU on August 1, 2023.
