VIU Students Presenting Research and Creative Activity during CREATE Conference

WHAT: VIU virtual CREATE Conference – a celebration of student scholarship, research and creative activity

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) annual CREATE Conference showcases student research projects, scholarship and creative activities through performances, posters, photography, short films and presentations. More than 200 students will be presenting during the conference, which is being held virtually. 

“While the past year has created new challenges for our faculty and students there was still an incredible amount of activity taking place,” says Nicole Vaugeois, VIU’s Associate Vice-President, Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity. “We look forward to closing this past year by showcasing and celebrating the excellent scholarship, research, and creative activity that people were engaged in and we welcome everyone to join us.”

Some highlights from the conference include:

On Monday, April 12, 1-2:30 pm, Keynote speaker Dr. Patricia Wells, an archaeologist and Managing Editor of Arctic Journal,  shares her personal and academic perspective on knowledge mobilization and the aspects in academia that influenced how she learned about the past.

On Tuesday, April 13, 6-8 pm, graduate students present during Three-Minute Thesis, which is a competition that challenges students to present their research in an accessible and compelling way.

On Wednesday, April 14, from 1-3 pm, people can attend the SHORT Films Festival, which features three- to five-minute films about a student’s learning experience or research project. Film Fest attendees can also cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award.

This year’s event also features an Anti-Racism Arts Festival which includes film, spoken word, music, dance and visual arts submissions such as painting, drawing and photography. The festival is co-sponsored by the VIU Faculty Association’s Human Rights and International Solidarity Committee and CREATE. The event aims to facilitate conversations about anti-racism in our communities, inside and outside the classroom. 

Everyday there will be various presentations that explore VIU’s seven research themes. This year, the two most popular themes are equity, diversity and social justice; and health, resilience and well-being. These are a strong reflection of our times examined through VIU student projects.
