DiscoverFest at VIU takes place Saturday, October 21, 12 to 4 pm
Spend a fall afternoon with your family and friends at Vancouver Island University (VIU) during DiscoverFest, a free, all-ages community festival.
“We are excited to welcome everyone to our campus to create connections, showcase our programs and expertise, eat some good food and have fun,” said Gillian Robinson, VIU’s Strategic Communications Director.
Highlights of the day include:
- The community stage with live music and performances, including Lantzville’s Raymond Salgado of Canada’s Got Talent fame, a bhangra dance lesson and local band From the Earth.
- A Fun Zone with bouncy castles, BC Hydro bucket truck rides, the Romper Room climbing wall, heavy equipment simulators and VIU’s mobile mass spectrometry lab.
- A pumpkin patch with pumpkins for sale.
- Food trucks: Tacomania, Sip and Sliders, Jack’s Grilled Cheese and Mizu.
- Face painting and hair feathers.
- An artisan market featuring VIU alumni and local businesses.
- Science fun such as a skeleton race, using liquid nitrogen to make freezies and making bird feeders.
- A “Storm the Stairs” challenge with Frontrunners.
- Lightning expert talks on a variety of subjects by VIU professors.
- Campus tours and opportunities to learn more about VIU’s programs and how to apply.
- Prizes and giveaways, including a MacBook Air Pro laptop.
“DiscoverFest came together from our desire to create deeper connections with our community members and partners and share the expertise we have here at VIU,” said Robinson. “We look forward to growing this event and continuing to build an annual event to look forward to in Nanaimo.”
Parking is free for the day in any of VIU’s lots and the event will take place rain or shine. Visit the DiscoverFest at VIU homepage for a full map and schedule of events.
