The VIU community celebrated and supported transgender people here and globally, and we marked International Women's Day with some fun and advocacy.
The Period Promise, Canada Learning Bond, Healthy Eating with Thrive
VIU and VIUSU made the Period Promise this year, our Canada Learning Bond team made big strides in helping youth in our region get educated, and the Thrive Team educated about healthy eating.
CREATE and Extreme Science
Students showed off their knowledge and passion during CREATE, and everyone got a show at Extreme Science.
Shq’apthut Phase II funding, the Talking Stick Ceremony
There were some days to celebrate when it was announced that the second phase of Shq'apthut is being funded, and University of Victoria officials gifted Cloy-e-iis, Dr. Judith Sayers, VIU’s Chancellor, with a Talking Stick crafted by Ts’usquinuxn, William Good, Master Carver from Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Visiting Dignitaries
President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Deborah Saucier received visits from the Consuls General of India and Brazil. Colleagues from Kenya in the Young Africa Works in Kenya: Youth Employability Through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative also paid us a visit.
March for MMIWG and the Moose Hide Campaign
VIU Community members came out to support those campaigning for justice for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and also to support the Moose Hide Campaign, which an Indigenous-led grassroots movement of men, boys and all Canadians to end violence against women and children.
Community Cousins turns 10 and a Soap Box Derby!
The Community Cousins program celebrated its tenth anniversary for making a difference in the lives of VIU's Indigenous students. Engineering students competed in a soap box derby to demonstrate their skills, have some fun, and reconnect in person.
Employee Recognition and fun
VIU Long Service employees picked up their certificates and some other goodies. And everyone who was able came to the Employee Celebration Taco Buffet where we were awarded the President's Special Award for Service Excellence and the Provost's Special Teaching Award Outstanding Achievement.
