Nanaimo, BC: More than a thousand high school students, mature students and parents will be coming to Vancouver Island University (VIU) next week for Discovery Day and Night – the University’s largest information sessions of the year.

“Vancouver Island University offers experiences in a small class environment, while at the same time providing rich and meaningful learning opportunities that you might only expect at larger institutions,” said Jennifer Merner, Associate Registrar, Student Recruitment & Advising. “Our expert faculty are committed to supporting and inspiring students to achieve their career aspirations. Discovery Day and Night gives anyone thinking about a post-secondary education a unique opportunity to come on campus, get hands on experiences and see what VIU has to offer.”

Both events take place on February 22. Discovery Day is open to all students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 and features a pep rally, faculty open houses where students can meet professors in different programs, a scavenger hunt and a student support market to learn more about campus life and services. It wraps up with a performance by the Khouwutzun Singers and Dancers and a Fire and Ice demonstration by faculty in the Science & Technology and Welding departments.

Discovery Night has options for high school students, parents and mature students to learn more about how VIU can support them to reach their goals. High school students can check out a variety of sessions, including a science student research panel, s’mores with student leaders, a mini theatre workshop and a mock Shark Tank with the VIU Business Students’ Association.

Parents can learn more about how to support their child in their educational journey and mingle with VIU staff who can answer their questions. Mature students head over to the VIU Students’ Union Pub to have snacks, drinks and chat with University experts about which programs may be a good fit to help them achieve their goals.

Visit the Discovery Day and Discovery Night websites to learn more. Registration is required to attend Discovery Night.
