Giving Tuesday: A visual representation of impact

Triangles in a beautiful design with lots of colours. Each triangle represents $5,000 in donations.

If you were one of the generous donors who contributed to VIU's Giving Tuesday 2022 campaign, you would have received a thank-you card with a stunning stained-glass design on the front.

The artwork was originally designed by Taryn Walker, VIU’s Alumni Relations Coordinator (and brought to life by Sheila Warren). Taryn wanted to find a way to get everyone in the office involved in the fundraising efforts for Giving Tuesday, so she came up with a unique and visually striking idea. Instead of using a traditional fundraising thermometer, she taped a whiteboard into a series of triangles, creating a kind of 'stained-glass' effect. Each shard of the design represents $5,000 donated to the campaign.

This year our goal of $350,000 was surpassed and raised over $500,000 in total.

"When I look at this design, I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for what we have accomplished. To me, they look like the mountains that sit across from our Nanaimo campus. This design represents the resilience and strength of our community, as well as our commitment to making a positive impact in the world,” says Rowen Warrilow, VIU Annual Giving Co-ordinator. “I believe that this piece will not only serve as a reminder of our successful campaign but also as a symbol of hope and inspiration for future endeavors. I am truly grateful for the generosity of all those who have contributed to this cause."

For Taryn, the best part of the design was how it brought everyone in the office together.

"It was rewarding to be able to send something out that everyone contributed to," she says. "And it helps donors visualize their impact. They can pick a triangle and say 'look, I helped make that triangle', which is pretty fun."

As VIU looks forward to next year's Giving Tuesday, Taryn is excited to find new and creative ways to capture the community's goodwill. It just goes to show how a simple and creative design can make a big impact and inspire people to come together for a good cause.
