English courses make great electives! ✏️
From film studies and television narrative, to young adult lit and an intro to advanced professional writing, there are lots of options for students from other disciplines to explore their passion for a certain genre or hone their writing skills. 200-level courses require six credits of first-year English, and 300-level courses require third-year standing in any program. Asian Heritage Month
May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. This year’s theme is recognition, resilience and resolve and “honours the contributions and the diverse stories of peoples of Asian descent in Canada, which are rooted in resilience and perseverance. It is also a call to action for all Canadians to come together to combat all forms of anti-Asian racism and discrimination.” Please check out the resources we share in our Honouring Asian Heritage Month blog post, and if you have more to add, please email links to students@viu.ca.
Campus Nutrition and Food Security Contest 🍏
Nourishing Innovation is seeking ideas from VIU students to develop innovative solutions to address food security on campus. The contest runs May 6 to June 6 and there are $4,500 in prizes for finalists and $4,500 for winning teams. Read contest rules and how to participate on Nourishing Innovation’s website.

Looking for a summer job? ☀️
There are dozens of positions still open on the Centre for Experiential Learning’sCareerVIU website – both external postings or VIU jobs. You can also check out resources that will help you get job-ready such as online networking opportunities or professional development events.
Info on student loans 💰
Doing some financial planning for the 2021-22 academic year? Be sure to check out government student loans and grants. Student loan funding and grants are available for eligible full and part-time students. There are also many non-repayable grants for which you will be automatically assessed when you apply for a student loan. Applications open in mid-June for the next academic year.
Planning to upgrade?
You may be eligible for funding to support you! The Adult Upgrading Grant(AUG) is funding from the provincial government that you do not need to pay back. It is for students enrolled in Adult Basic Education, Workplace Essential Skills Training, or English as a Second Language.
Don’t forget to apply for external awards 🏆
External awards include scholarships, awards and bursaries that are available to all students through agencies unaffiliated with Vancouver Island University. To help minimize student debt, check out our categorized list of awards.

Nanaimo Rent Bank 💰
The Rent Bank can offer a short-term loan for rent or essential utilities to low-income individuals or families in Nanaimo who are experiencing financial challenges. Up to $1,400 for individuals, $1,700 for families and $500 for essential utility arrears. To learn more about the program and how to apply visit the John Howard Society’s website.
Campus Store hours ⏰
The Campus Store and Print Shop are going to summer hours of 8 am to 3:30 pm starting Monday, May 10, 2021, to Friday, July 30, 2021. The store hours will go back to 8 am to 4:30 pm on Tuesday August 3, 2021.
